Culture Profile: Mexico

This blog is the result of a Professional Development Project for ESOL. My objective is to learn more about Mexico and the Hispanic Culture. I will develop a culture profile for Mexico. It is my hope that by developing this online, I may be able to share any useful knowledge in an organized and accessible manner. all of my projects are always a work in progress. Native Country

Climate: Mexico is rich with plants and vegetation and has a range of climates: arid semi hot, arid very hot, and arid and temperate.

Economy: Mexico's currency: the basic unit of money in Mexico is called the peso; it is equal to 100 centavos. Tourism brings in the most money and provides the most jobs.

School System:

The Roman Catholic Church use to control the school system, but now it is managed primarily by the government. Children six through fourteen are mandated to go to school in Mexico. Many of Mexico's children do not complete elementary school and only a slight number go on to complete secondary schools and college.

Transportation: Much like the climate, methods of transportation vary greatly. There are very current forms: complex highway systems, railways and international airports. However there are not as many cars in Mexico as there are in the United States. There are vast differences between the city and rural areas in Mexico for each category of study

Poem from John Santos- First Mexican-American Rhodes Scholar

I learned to breathe this way when I left that body made of ashes, river water, copal and huisache flowers.

When my breathe was South, it was a feather as big as a palm frond. The infinite miles were numbered in stars and the earth was lit from inside.

My eyes were mirrors and my heart was wind. The ground pulled my song like a magnet. The bananas were so ripe they spread like butter when they first brought guns into the garden.

Our legacy is papaya, is frijol, is sangria by the gallons. Helix inside of helix, the color of blood.

Dead uncles. Lost friends. Forgotten amantes.

For five hundred years of impossible weather, this lightening has felt like night, weaving its net of forgetting across these lands.
